Reciting Surah ad-Dukhan brings forgiveness

In one sentence

Although the hadiths on reciting Surah ad-Dukhan on Laylatul Jumu'ah have individual weakness, their multiple corroborating narrations together establish a real virtue, so believers should recite this short surah tonight for forgiveness of minor sins, angelic istighfar, and a house in Jannah.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Opening hadiths from Abu Hurairah and Abu Umamah on virtues of Surah ad-Dukhan on Jumu'ah night/day
  2. Context: continuing a book on the virtues of Jumu'ah; Surah ad-Dukhan is lesser known than Surah al-Kahf and very short (2.5 pages, 25th Juz)
  3. Why the author cited multiple narrations: weak hadiths strengthen each other like strings bundled together
  4. Three combined virtues: forgiveness of minor sins, 70,000 angels making istighfar until morning, a house built in Jannah
  5. Exhortation to recite it tonight (only 10-15 minutes) with hope in Allah's greater mercy
  6. Closing dua for ability to recite Surah ad-Dukhan, al-Kahf, and salawat on the Prophet

For the dinner table

Mufti Bilal explained that although the narrations about Surah ad-Dukhan are individually weak, many Companions reported similar virtues, so scholars strengthen them when they are gathered together like many strings braided into a rope. He taught that reciting Surah ad-Dukhan on Laylatul Jumu'ah brings three special gifts: forgiveness of minor sins, seventy thousand angels asking forgiveness for you, and a house built for you in Jannah. He also reminded us that Allah's mercy is far greater than any number we can imagine, and what Allah truly wants is our love, sincerity, and full attention. Because Surah ad-Dukhan is only about two and a half pages long, it can be finished in ten to fifteen minutes, making it an easy deed to add to our Friday night. He encouraged us to also keep reciting Surah al-Kahf and sending abundant salutations upon the Prophet as part of honoring Jumu'ah.

  1. What's one short deed our family could do tonight that would make Allah happy?
  2. If angels were praying for you all night, what would you want them to ask forgiveness for?
  3. How can we help each other recite Surah ad-Dukhan this Friday night without making it feel like homework?
