Honor your parents even after death
“If your parents have already passed away you could catch up by being good to them even after they passed away.”
Muslims must honor their parents as a duty placed immediately after worship of Allah, showing patience, service, and kindness even when parents are difficult or deceased.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames Jum'ah's reminder around the elevated status of parents after worship of Allah.
- Connects dutifulness to parents with avoiding shirk and expressing gratitude, regardless of the parents' character.
- Warns that disrespect, insults, frustration, and causing parents to cry are among the gravest sins.
- Emphasizes caring for elderly parents as a difficult test and a path to Paradise.
- Explains ways to honor deceased parents through dua, charity, Hajj or Umrah, and kindness to their friends.
- Closes by urging reconciliation, daily prayer for parents, and consistently excellent conduct.
In the khateeb's words
“The real test Is at their elderly age When it's hard to bear them When they say certain things And when they make so much requests”
“Not just be good But do ihsan Go above and beyond For them Show them The real meaning Of ihsan This is what Is intended For the parents”
“If your parents Have already passed away You could catch up By being good to them Even after they passed away”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that parents hold an enormous right in Islam, immediately after the duty to worship Allah. It urges us to show ihsan, more than merely avoiding harm, through respectful speech, patience, time, generosity, and care, especially when parents become elderly. Even when parents are difficult or invite wrongdoing, we should not obey sinful commands but should still accompany them kindly. If parents have died, we can continue honoring them through dua, charity, Hajj or Umrah, and kindness to their friends. The message is to repair strained relationships now and treat parental service as a path toward Allah's pleasure and Paradise.
- What is one kind thing we can do for our parents this week without being asked?
- How can we show patience when an older parent repeats a request?
- Who could we make dua for today, and what would we ask Allah to give them?
