Faith grows through love and salam
True and complete faith (iman), the precondition for entering Paradise, is impossible without sincere love between believers, and that love is actively cultivated by spreading the greeting of salam and doing righteous deeds together.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening hadith: no Paradise without belief, no belief without mutual love; the Prophet swears an oath to stress its gravity, and prescribes spreading salam
- The nature of iman: 60-70 branches, it rises with good deeds and falls with sin (Abu Darda: guard your faith and know its state)
- The scholarly definition of iman: conviction in the heart, profession by the tongue, action by the limbs, and repentance after inevitable sin
- What kind of love completes faith: loving for your brother what you love for yourself, and the divinely-placed 'wudd' (stronger than muhabba) of Surah Maryam
- Allah's love announced to the angels and the people of earth; the du'a asking for Allah's love and the love of those who love Him
- Story of Abu Idris al-Khawlani and Mu'adh ibn Jabal: 'I love you for the sake of Allah' and the promise of Allah's love for those who love, sit, visit, and spend for His sake
- Salam as worship: Ibn al-Qayyim's three points (du'a, remembrance, mechanism of love) and the 10/20/30 rewards hadith; closing du'as
In the khateeb's words
“on one of the noble sayings of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.”
“As He has advised us by the one in whose hands is my soul.”
“in order to draw our attention to the seriousness on what he is advising us of.”
“It is a precondition for an individual entering into paradise.”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb reminded us that faith is not just a feeling in our hearts, it shows up in our words, our actions, and how we treat one another. He taught us that iman goes up with good deeds and goes down with sin, so we should pay attention to what strengthens or weakens it. He also explained that true belief means loving for others what we love for ourselves, and that this love is something Allah Himself places in the hearts of those who believe and do good. Finally, he said that simple things like giving salams, visiting one another, and coming together on Jumu'ah are powerful ways to build that love. So this week, let's look for ways to greet each other warmly, care sincerely for one another, and do small good deeds that keep our faith growing.
- What is one small good deed you can do this week to make your iman stronger?
- Who is someone at school or the masjid you can greet with a warm salam tomorrow?
- How would you feel if a friend celebrated your success the same way you celebrate theirs?
