Use winter for worship and kindness
Allah's wisdom in the timing of revelation, seasons, worship, and the qibla should move believers to use winter for fasting, night prayer, kindness, generosity, and obedient action.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reflects on Allah's power, wisdom, and mercy through time, speed, Voyager, light, and the Buraq.
- Connects shorter winter days and longer nights with fasting and qiyam.
- Uses revelation history and Surah al-Baqarah to discuss patience, accountability, and divine wisdom.
- Explains qiyam by verse counts and describes qualities of people entering Jannah: kindness, feeding others, fasting, and night prayer.
- Recounts the qibla change from Jerusalem to the Ka'bah as a lesson in obeying Allah's command.
- Concludes with prayers for sick community members, guidance, steadfastness, mercy, and a good ending.
In the khateeb's words
“Meaning that when winter comes, meaning when the shorter days start to come, this is the time for the believer.”
“He says this is the one who speaks gently and kindly. Not only to the loved ones, parents, siblings, friends, workplace, anywhere.”
“Sometimes we literally enter what we call a passive mode. Meaning that we listen to something and we see something and we pass.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that time, seasons, and even the speed of the universe point to Allah's power, wisdom, and mercy. Winter's short days and long nights can become a gift: we can fast more easily and make time for qiyam, even beginning with a small number of verses. He also taught that people of Jannah speak gently, feed others, fast, and pray when others sleep, so faith should lead to kindness and action for people in need. The change of the qibla showed that the heart of worship is following Allah's command, and the khutbah ended with prayers for healing, guidance, steadfastness, mercy, and a good ending.
- What small fasting or night-prayer goal could we try this week?
- Who needs kindness or practical help from our family right now?
- What does obeying Allah look like when something feels unfamiliar?
