Gratitude is a lifelong act of worship

“In Islam, gratefulness is a lifestyle.”

The khateeb, at 6:25

After every prayer, recite “Allahumma a‘inni ‘ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ibadatik.”
Acknowledge blessings in the heart, say Alhamdulillah, and use one’s faculties in obedience rather than disobedience.
In religious matters, look to people better than oneself and emulate them.
In worldly matters, look toward people with fewer material blessings to cultivate contentment.
Regularly notice and thank Allah for ordinary blessings such as food, shelter, family, health, sight, hearing, and faith.

For the dinner table

The khutbah teaches that gratitude to Allah is not just saying thank you once in a while; it should shape our whole life. We show it by recognizing blessings in our hearts, praising Allah with our words, and using our bodies and abilities in good ways. The Prophet modeled this gratitude even during hardship, and we are encouraged to ask Allah for help after every prayer. We should look up to people who are stronger in faith, while remembering those who have fewer worldly blessings. Noticing our everyday gifts should also make us compassionate toward people suffering around the world and in our own communities.

  1. What blessing did you notice today that you usually overlook?
  2. How can we show gratitude with our actions, not only our words?
  3. Who is someone whose faith or character inspires you?
