Faith grows when we keep improving
“What is the next level that Allah wants for me?”
Believers should treat spiritual life like a growing plant by deepening their identity and knowledge, nourishing themselves through worship and community, moving toward Allah’s guidance, and continually improving their character and conduct.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines soil as knowing one’s identity, purpose, and belonging as a servant of Allah and member of Muhammad’s ummah.
- Presents Quran, prayer, remembrance, good companionship, and masjid life as spiritual water, and divine guidance as light.
- Warns that environment and entertainment shape believers, urging removal of haram and doubtful influences.
- Calls listeners to measure growth in prayer, character, patience, knowledge, service, and commitment rather than settle for minimum.
- Encourages hope, congregational prayer, remembering death, visiting graves, and telling loved ones they are loved.
- Closes with self-control by guarding the tongue and private conduct, then distinguishes ibadah from mensak and forms of ingratitude.
In the khateeb's words
“Without roots, it cannot withstand storms. For the believer, that foundation is knowledge of who you are. It is not an accident.”
“This is why successful believers never ask, what is the least I can do? Instead, we should be asking, what is the next level that Allah wants for me?”
“The toothpaste represents your words. Once they leave your mouth, you cannot completely take them back.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah compares a believer to a plant that needs soil, water, and light. Our soil is knowing that Allah created us with purpose; water is prayer, Quran, remembrance, and good company; light is Allah’s guidance. We should examine our lives when we feel stuck, asking what needs strengthening instead of giving up, and keep looking for the next level of growth. Growth includes improving prayer and character, serving others, remembering death, visiting graves, and telling people we love them. The sermon ends by reminding us to guard our words and private conduct, because words cannot be fully taken back and self-control protects our relationships and faith.
- What helps you feel spiritually watered this week?
- What is one small way you can grow before next Friday?
- What kind word could you say to someone tonight that they would remember?
