For the dinner table

Today's khutbah was about one of Allah's names, Ad-Dayyan, the One who judges His servants and rewards them for what they did. The imam reminded us that while many people go looking for scares at this time of year, the fear that really matters is a deep awe of Allah that makes us want to obey Him. He told us that on the Day of Judgment Allah will make sure everyone gets their rights back, even for a single slap or a hurtful joke, and even between animals. That's why we should treat people kindly now and say sorry to anyone we've hurt while we still can. He also reminded us never to lose hope in Allah's mercy, because fear of Allah should always go together with hope in His forgiveness.

  1. Is there anyone you might have hurt with your words, even as a joke, and how could you make it right this week?
  2. The imam said 'how you treat others is how Allah will treat you.' How do you want to treat people tomorrow?
  3. Why do you think Allah wants us to have both fear of Him and hope in His mercy?
