Honor the blessed day through worship
“This is the day of Jum'ah the whole day.”
Friday is a uniquely blessed day, so Muslims should honor it by prioritizing Jumu'ah, preparing well, arriving early, listening attentively, and remembering Allah throughout the day.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Friday’s importance through Surah al-Jumu'ah’s command to leave trade and attend remembrance.
- Explains rewards for ghusl, early arrival, walking to the mosque, sitting near the imam, and listening quietly.
- Describes Friday’s special status, including its connection to Adam, the Day of Judgment, salawat, and an hour when dua is accepted.
- Expands Friday beyond the prayer by emphasizing forgiveness, dhikr, and seeking Allah’s bounty afterward.
- Urges Muslims to prioritize Jumu'ah over work or school and warns against repeatedly missing it.
- Concludes with prayers for faith, the deceased, and protection from the trials of the grave.
In the khateeb's words
“for every step that he had taken to the Masjid for every step he gets the reward of standing up at night for one year and also fasting the whole year”
“this is the day of Jum'ah not the salah this is the day of Jum'ah the whole day”
“salatul jum'ah is important even if you had to work and all of us most of us work”
For the dinner table
Friday is a special day for Muslims, and Jumu'ah is meant to shape more than a single hour. We can prepare by making ghusl, arriving early, walking when possible, listening quietly, and sending blessings on the Prophet. The khutbah reminds us to put prayer ahead of trade and to keep remembering Allah afterward, while asking schools and workplaces for the support needed to attend. Missing Jumu'ah repeatedly is treated seriously, so our family should help one another protect this weekly act of worship. We can also use Friday to make sincere dua and remember those who have died.
- What could help us arrive at Jumu'ah earlier and listen more attentively?
- How can we remember Allah together after the prayer?
