Prayer must come before worldly duties
“Establishing prayer means the number one thing in your mind is prayer.”
Salah is the believer's greatest gift and direct lifeline to Allah, a connection that must be established on time, in purity, and above every worldly obligation, because it is the first thing you will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening reminder of taqwa and daily self-assessment: what have you prepared for tomorrow?
- Counting blessings in summer and a brief appeal to donate to the masjid as sadaqah jariyah
- Long summer prayer gaps made the khateeb feel how the heart longs to reconnect with Allah
- Salah etymologically means connection; it is the first pillar after the shahada, and 'iqam al-salah' means making prayer your number one priority
- Conditions of prayer: praying within the prescribed time, illustrated by salat al-khawf and the revert's work-schedule question
- Conditions of prayer: purity, proper wudu, and bodily cleanliness
- Salah was gifted to all the prophets, Musa, Isa, and Ibrahim, as a tool to endure their trials
- Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj: Allah uniquely summoned the Prophet for the command of prayer (50 reduced to 5); prayer is the Prophet's comfort, the coolness of his eyes, and the first question on Judgment Day
In the khateeb's words
“establishing prayer means the number one thing in your mind is prayer”
“you pray salah but you have to want to pray salah i understand with certain jobs it could be more difficult”
“the salah is your first impression habibi you have to have a good first impression when you go to Allah”
For the dinner table
Today the khateeb reminded us that salah is not just a duty, it is a gift and a direct connection to Allah, which is why its very name comes from the word for connection. He shared that the long summer days left him missing prayer, showing how the believer's heart longs to talk to Allah. He explained that prayer must happen in its set time and in a state of purity, even at work or in hard circumstances, because prayer is the first pillar after the shahada. He showed that every prophet, Musa, Isa, and Ibrahim, was given prayer as a tool to get through their trials, and that Allah uniquely called Prophet Muhammad up to the heavens to give us this command. Finally, he warned that prayer is the first thing we will be asked about on the Day of Judgment, so it is our first impression with Allah.
- If prayer is a phone call with Allah, what would you want to say on your next call?
- What is one thing that gets in the way of praying on time for you?
- The Prophet called prayer the coolness of his eyes, what does praying feel like for you?
