Good deeds need sincere intention
Accepted good deeds require sincere intention, hope in Allah’s reward, righteous surroundings, encouragement of others, steadfast prayer, and trust in Allah’s wisdom when outcomes remain hidden.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Worship includes doing good, but accepted deeds require specific conditions.
- Sincere intention and confidence in Allah’s reward distinguish worship from showing off.
- Good environments, personal example, and encouraging others help spread righteousness.
- Believers should ask Allah for steadfastness and remember that He knows every deed.
- Surah al-Kahf provides Friday guidance and protection from trials through its stories.
- The Musa-Khidr narrative teaches patience, humility, and trust when divine wisdom is not immediately visible.
- The sermon applies tawakkul to contemporary oppression and urges making Surah al-Kahf a regular Friday practice.
In the khateeb's words
“We don't want our children to grow up in a bad environment. We want our children to be in a good environment.”
“Always fastabikul khairat. Race towards that good because you're not guaranteed that next moment, that next time.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that doing good begins with our intentions and seeking reward from Allah rather than praise from people. Good company and surroundings can help us grow, and our words and actions can encourage others toward goodness too. We need to ask Allah for help and keep doing small good deeds consistently, remembering that He sees them even when nobody else notices. Through the story of Musa and Khidr, the khateeb explained that we may not understand why something happens, yet we can keep developing patience and trust in Allah. He also encouraged making Surah Al-Kahf a regular Friday practice and taking opportunities to do good while we have them.
- What good deed could you do quietly, even if nobody notices?
- Who helps you make good choices, and how do they help?
- When something disappointing happens, what helps you be patient and remember Allah?
