Answer anti-Islam rhetoric with faith
“We all have the opportunity and the responsibility of representing Islam with our actions.”
Muslims should answer renewed anti-Islam rhetoric by confidently practicing Islam, excelling in their work, responding with patience and taqwa, and trusting that the faith will continue to spread.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Claims recent anti-Islam rhetoric is coordinated and has shifted from exclusion to fear of Muslim integration and immigration.
- Uses public figures, prophetic-era persecution, and early Muslim-American history to argue that Islam has endured and belongs in America.
- Urges Muslims to practice Islam openly, excel professionally, contribute charitably, and represent the faith through their actions.
- Calls for patience, taqwa, and trust in Allah amid insults, while emphasizing Islam’s continued growth.
- Warns embarrassed Muslims not to abandon their faith and encourages them to become examples for others.
In the khateeb's words
“It's not in spite of the religion, but it's because of the religion.”
“Excel in your jobs. Excel in your fields. Sometimes this is the best way to give da'wah.”
“Not everyone is going to give a khutbah. Not everyone is going to be a scholar and teach. But we all have the opportunity and the responsibility of representing Islam with our actions.”
“So be proud of your being. Turn back to your being. Don't be shy about it.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb spoke about hostility toward Muslims and encouraged us to stay steady in our faith. He reminded us that Islam teaches excellence in everything, including our work, studies, and everyday responsibilities. We can represent our faith through kindness, charity, and the way we treat people around us. When we face hurtful words or challenges, he urged patience, mindfulness of Allah, and trust in Him. He also shared the story of a new Muslim who lost support from friends and family, and encouraged everyone to practice Islam with confidence.
- What is one responsibility you could do with more care this week?
- How could you respond with patience if someone made an unkind comment about your faith?
- How could our family help someone new to our community feel welcome?
