Organize your time around worship
“Throughout the day, throughout the night, we have to have an awrad.”
Success in this life and the hereafter comes from organizing our time around worship, inward responsibility, and resistance to distractions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines worship as humanity’s purpose and Islam as a foundation for progress.
- Explains the promise of inner richness through dedicating time to worship.
- Introduces awrad as a daily schedule including prayer, Quran, remembrance, and night prayer.
- Expands worship to include patience, hope, concern for Muslims, and communal responsibility.
- Emphasizes following the Prophet’s example and remembering life’s limited duration.
- Warns that phone use, algorithms, and scrolling can consume attention and weaken worship.
In the khateeb's words
“occupy your time in the worship of me and I will fill your chest with gheena.”
“Throughout the day, throughout the night, we have to have an awrad. We have to have a schedule that we give ourselves to if we truly say we believe in Allah and we practice this religion.”
“Al-Amanah is the individual who understands that he or she has duties and responsibilities towards Allah and towards the Muslims.”
For the dinner table
Brother Musa reminded us that Allah created us to worship Him and that closeness to Allah brings richness to the heart. He encouraged us to build our days around the five daily prayers and make time for Quran, remembrance, and other acts of worship. Worship also includes what we carry inside, such as patience, hope, gratitude, and concern for other Muslims. He reminded us that we need one another and can learn from Muslims with different backgrounds and experiences. He also asked us to look honestly at our screen time so that distractions do not crowd out the worship that gives our lives direction.
- When could you practice patience or show care for someone this week?
- What could help you put your phone down when it is time to pray or read Quran?
