Love for Allah transforms the heart

“How do you gain love for Allah?”

The khateeb, at 33:03

In one sentence

Sincere love for Allah and His Messenger is the strongest force in the heart, and when it enters a person's life it transforms them completely, as proven by the companions whose lives were turned 180 degrees by it.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening: taqwa reminder, Friday as the weekly iman recharge, linking back to last week's khutbah on repentance (Fudayl ibn Ayyad)
  2. Thesis: love as the heart's strongest driving force, constructive (love of Allah and His Messenger) vs destructive (anything that consumes you and pulls you from Allah)
  3. Hadith of the Bedouin ('you will be with whom you love') and the hadith of the drunken companion ('do not curse him, he loves Allah and His Messenger')
  4. Story of Umar ibn al-Khattab's conversion through hearing Surah Taha, and his transformation into the just second khalifa
  5. Story of Mus'ab ibn Umair: from Meccan aristocrat to first ambassador of Islam, martyred at Uhud in a barely-sufficient garment
  6. Story of Abu Talha giving his beloved garden Bayruha after Surah Ali Imran 3:92, plus Ibn Umar giving the fish
  7. Three practical ways to gain love for Allah: know His names, recite and ponder the Quran, refrain from sin
  8. Closing du'as including for oppressed Muslims in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran
Try this week
Constantly repent to Allah to recharge and polish the heart, treating Friday as a weekly iman reset
Regulate the loves in your heart so nothing, relationships, money, job, haram, ranks above Allah
Learn Allah's names and attributes (Rahman, Latif, Khabir, Sami, Al-Wadud) to build love through knowledge
Recite the Quran regularly and ponder its meanings as the primary way to increase love for Allah
Refrain from sin, which darkens the heart and weakens love for Allah
Give charity from what you love most, not from leftovers, following Abu Talha's example
Attend the Muna food drive held every third Saturday of the month (announced at the end)
Sources the khateeb cited

For the dinner table

The khateeb taught that love is the most powerful force in the human heart: it can either build us up or destroy us. When sincere love for Allah enters a person’s heart, it transforms everything, just as it changed Umar ibn al-Khattab, Mus’ab ibn Umair, Abu Talha, and even a simple Bedouin man. Repentance opens the door, and then knowing Allah, reflecting on the Quran, and staying away from sin keep that love alive. This week, we can ask ourselves what we love most and whether it is drawing us closer to Allah or pulling us away.

  1. What is one thing you love so much that it would be hard to give up for Allah’s sake?
  2. Can you think of a time doing the right thing felt hard but made you feel closer to Allah?
  3. What is one small good deed you want to do this week to show love for Allah?
