Gratitude preserves Allah’s blessings

“If you're constantly looking at those who have more than you, you'll stop being grateful for the blessings of Allah.”

The khutbah argues that recognizing and expressing gratitude for all of Allah’s blessings preserves and increases them, especially through reflection, humility, and service to the community.

For the dinner table

Allah has given us more blessings than we can count, and the khutbah reminds us to notice them while they are still present. Gratitude is not only for money or possessions; faith, family, food, water, safety, and access to a masjid are blessings too. We can practice it by reflecting and saying alhamdulillah, looking at those with less rather than those with more, and remembering that we will answer for what we received. Our masajid are gifts that support prayer, learning, and community, so gratitude can include helping other communities establish them. May our tongues, hearts, and actions show thanks to Allah.

  1. What is one blessing in our family that we usually take for granted?
  2. How does looking at people with less change the way we think about what we have?
  3. How can we show gratitude for our masjid this week?
