Seek the full truth and stand for justice
“Learn the full truth, speak the full truth, and act upon the full truth instead of just relying on sound bites and partial narratives and slogans.”
The khutbah argues that Muslims must actively seek Allah’s guidance by learning, speaking, and acting on the full truth, standing for justice, and guiding children through honest conversations.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Distinguishes guidance that shows the path from guidance that changes hearts, which belongs to Allah.
- Applies the duty to seek truth to remembering 9/11 and acknowledging the suffering caused by subsequent wars and sanctions.
- Calls listeners to reject partial narratives, examine root causes, and stand for justice even against their own side.
- Warns that distorted religious and political narratives can justify oppression and violence.
- Addresses religious bullying of Muslim children and urges parents to maintain open conversations and seek knowledgeable help.
- Closes with supplications for guidance, steadfast hearts, and righteous children, followed by the prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“guidance is not just knowing right or wrong it's not just knowing one part of history of what happened on one day but rather it is the full truth”
“guidance matters not just when we come to the masjid not just when we pray but also the way we learn history”
“learn the full truth speak the full truth and act upon the full truth instead of just relying on sound bites and partial narratives and slogans”
“we have to be able to allow our children to come from school and have those conversations about what they see and what they hear”
For the dinner table
The sermon teaches that guidance means both showing a good path and asking Allah to keep our hearts firm. It says we must face the full truth about 9/11 and the suffering that followed, instead of accepting partial stories. We should seek justice even when it challenges our own country, family, or political side. Parents and guardians should regularly ask children what they are experiencing at school, especially when bullying or prejudice may be involved. When we do not have an answer, we can find a trustworthy person who can help guide our children.
- What does it mean to look for the full truth?
- What could you do if someone at school makes an unfair joke about your religion?
- Who could our family ask for help when we do not know an answer?
