The Quran corrects false beliefs about Isa
“The deed has to be done with correct belief.”
True worship depends on sound belief, sincere intention, and correct action, and Muslims should preserve that truth by learning and teaching the Quranic account of Isa and Maryam.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Establishes correct belief, sincere intention, and correct action as conditions for accepted worship.
- Argues that religious happiness, popularity, or sacrifice does not prove truth; Islam’s standard is haqq.
- Presents the Quran as correcting false beliefs about Isa and Maryam.
- Relates Maryam’s birth, her mother’s dedication, and acceptance of Allah’s decree.
- Describes Maryam’s upbringing under Zakariya and distinguishes her miracle from prophethood.
- Encourages families to study and teach the stories of Isa and Maryam to children.
In the khateeb's words
“the deed has to be done with correct belief, sahih, aqidah, the belief has to be correct.”
“That's our religion. The religions of the past and even rectifies the books of the past.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that worship calls for correct belief, a good intention, and the right action together. He explained that our faith rests on truth, even when following it brings difficulty or goes against our desires. He spoke about Maryam and Isa as servants of Allah and about how the Qur’an teaches their story. Through Maryam’s mother, he reminded us that Allah may answer our prayers differently from what we expected. He encouraged us to read these stories with our children and ended by asking Allah for correct belief, knowledge, and the ability to follow it.
- What good intention could you bring to something you do tomorrow?
- What can we learn from Maryam’s mother about receiving something different from what we hoped for?
