Make dua sincerely and persistently

“Trying your best and Allah will do the rest for you.”

The khateeb, at 13:55

In one sentence

Du'a is an essential act of worship and source of Allah's help, so believers should make it sincerely and persistently while following its etiquette, taking practical means, and removing spiritual barriers to acceptance.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Defines sincere du'a as worship and explains human dependence on Allah.
  2. Presents the etiquette of supplication: purity, humility, focus, praise, blessings on the Prophet, persistence, trust, and practical effort.

  4. Explains that Allah may answer immediately, delay for wisdom, avert harm, forgive sins, or reserve reward for the Hereafter.
  5. Identifies causes of rejection: insincerity, distracted hearts, sinful requests, severing family ties, neglecting moral duties, and consuming haram.
  6. Uses Ibrahim ibn Adham's ten spiritual failures to call listeners to act on faith, gratitude, Sunnah, self-correction, and remembrance of death.
  7. Closes with supplications for piety, protection from sin, relief from hardship, and divine help.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah taught us that du'a is both asking Allah for help and worshipping Him. We should make du'a sincerely, with humility, trust, patience, and effort, especially at blessed times. Allah may answer by giving what we ask, delaying it for wisdom, protecting us from harm, or saving its reward for the Hereafter. We should also keep our hearts present, avoid sinful requests and haram food, follow the Prophet's guidance, thank Allah, and learn from our mistakes.
