Building a better society starts with us
“Change has to come from us.”
A better society begins when each Muslim accepts personal responsibility, changes inwardly and at home, supports younger people, and represents Islam through everyday conduct for Allah's pleasure.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls listeners to examine their personal role in building a more honest, just, and respectful society.
- Uses the missing jigsaw-puzzle piece to show that every person has value and responsibility.
- Explains that Muslims publicly represent Islam and should embody good conduct in ordinary interactions.
- Applies the call for change to self-assessment, family life, and supporting children's environmental and ethical learning.
- Encourages making improvements for Allah's pleasure, trusting that sincere sacrifice is replaced with something better.
- Closes with a call for sincere Jumu'ah dua, followed by supplications and Quran recitation.
In the khateeb's words
“each one of us should see ourselves as that missing piece that's required in society to complete society”
“change has to come from us change has to begin with each of us”
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is going to replace what they have left off with that which is even better for that person”
“when we see our children making the effort to make changes in the things that they understand we should ask them to tell us about it”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that wanting a better society is not enough; each of us must ask what part we are playing in building it. Like a missing piece in a jigsaw puzzle, every person has value and a contribution that helps make the whole community complete. Our public behavior can also show others what Islam looks like, so kindness and good character are an important form of da’wah. Real change begins within ourselves and in the choices we make at home, including how we listen to and support young people. When we give up something for Allah and sincerely ask Him to guide us, we can trust that He will help us grow into something better.
- What is one small change you could make that would help your family, school, or neighborhood?
- When has someone’s good character helped you understand their beliefs or values?
- What is something young people understand that adults should listen to more carefully?
