Honor the dead by serving others
“There is no life without love.”
The deaths of three community members should be understood through Islam’s theology of martyrdom, not as a call to seek death, while survivors honor them by resisting despair, returning to the mosque, and continuing their service.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Encourages continued mosque attendance and highlights the blessed first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.
- Explains martyrdom as Allah’s choice and distinguishes love of life from wishing for death.
- Uses Al-Fatiha and Surah An-Nisa to describe the ranks of prophets, the truthful, martyrs, and righteous people.
- Presents the martyrs’ deaths as an honored mission with lasting da'wah impact.
- Teaches mourners to love the deceased without becoming emotionally attached, then thanks responders, partners, staff, and neighbors.
- Calls the community to remain steadfast, return to the mosque, continue the deceased’s legacy, and closes with supplication and Quran recitation.
In the khateeb's words
“the best amongst you is the one who lived a long life full with good deeds”
“Love the people I believe my brothers and sisters There is no life without love Love them Love your parents Love your children Love your spouse”
“The ark of Noah That saves Noah And the believers Is the mosque”
For the dinner table
This khutbah spoke to a community grieving three brothers who died protecting others, and the khateeb prayed that Allah would accept them as martyrs. He reminded everyone that life is precious because it gives us opportunities to do good. He remembered Brother Amin’s care for people and encouraged sincere service that does not depend on public recognition. He thanked the police, interfaith community, teachers, students, and neighbors for their help, and promised support for the neighbors in return. He urged the community to stay connected to the mosque and continue the brothers’ good example, closing with prayers for their families’ patience and for protection and mercy throughout the world.
- Brother Amin noticed when people needed help; whom could you help this week?
- What kind thing could our family do for a neighbor?
- What good quality of someone you miss would you like to practice?
