Honor sacred mosques by serving your local one
“You can feel the sadness of occupation.”
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Arabic opening: praise of Allah, shahada, salawat on the Prophet, command of taqwa with Surah Al 'Imran 3:102
- Surah al-Isra connects al-Masjid al-Haram with al-Masjid al-Aqsa, Aqsa is part of the declaration of tawhid
- Recent events: worshippers blocked, armed guards, a Turkish visitor denied entry for Jumu'ah at al-Aqsa
- Hadith: travel is only undertaken to three mosques, Haram, Aqsa, and the Prophet's mosque, completing the sacred triangle
- Rebuke of those who abandon their local masjid five minutes away to drive forty minutes elsewhere; your local masjid has the most right upon you
- Personal testimony: visiting al-Aqsa and feeling the sadness of occupation; the masjid is crying out to the Ummah
- Call to honor al-Aqsa as the Ummah would the Haram, prayers for the murabitin, and closing Arabic du'a for the mosques, the sick, and the deceased
In the khateeb's words
“you can feel the sadness of occupation you can feel the sadness of oppression and thulum through the trees that you see the stones that you see”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that Allah mentions both Masjid Al-Haram and Masjid Al-Aqsa together in the Quran, and the Prophet taught that traveling far for worship is only meant for these three blessed mosques. The khateeb shared that Al-Aqsa is going through a painful test right now: armed guards are keeping Muslims from praying Jumu'ah there, and he even watched a video of a Muslim from Turkey being turned away for no reason. He also warned us not to neglect our own neighborhood masjid while driving long distances to other communities, because the local masjid has the greatest right over us and we support it simply by showing up for prayer. He asked us to imagine how the whole Ummah would react if the same oppression touched Makkah or Madinah, and to feel that same concern for Al-Aqsa. Let's ask Allah to protect Al-Aqsa, strengthen its guardians, and make us people who truly honor every house of Allah.
- Why do you think Allah connected Masjid Al-Haram and Masjid Al-Aqsa in the Quran?
- What is one small thing our family can do for our own local masjid this week?
- If you heard that Muslims were being stopped from praying at Al-Aqsa, what would you ask Allah to do?
