Allah preserves the Quran and Sunnah
“We just keep going to the best of our abilities. That's all we can ask.”
Allah preserves the Qur'an and Sunnah, so Muslims should reject despair, follow revelation, and persevere faithfully with whatever responsibilities and opportunities they have.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Calls believers to taqwa, truthful speech, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger.
- Explains that the Prophet trusted Allah to preserve the religion after his death.
- Recounts the Qur'an's preservation through memorization, Yamama, Abu Bakr, Zayd ibn Thabit, and Uthman.
- Presents the Qur'an's preservation as a unique sign and source of guidance.
- Defines Islam as the Qur'an and Sunnah rather than culture, society, or personal opinion.
- Encourages Muslims not to despair because the religion will endure regardless of human opposition.
- Urges listeners to use their available platforms, stand firm, and never give up.
In the khateeb's words
“It is the one book, and I emphasize this so much, because it is this book that I know guided me, and has guided countless, countless people to this religion, without ever having to even interact with a Muslim.”
“Islam is the Quran, and the sunnah of the Prophet . That's it. That's all this religion is.”
“The only question is what part are we going to play?”
“We just keep going to the best of our abilities. That's all we can ask.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Allah has preserved the Qur'an and the Sunnah throughout history. The Qur'an was collected and protected through the efforts of early Muslims, but its ultimate preservation belongs to Allah. Because the religion belongs to Allah, we should not become hopeless when Muslims face difficulties or opposition. Our responsibility is to use whatever abilities and opportunities we have to serve what is right. We should keep going, remain humble, and ask Allah to keep us on the straight path.
- What is one opportunity Allah has given you to do something beneficial this week?
- What helps you keep going when you feel discouraged?
- How can we tell whether a practice comes from Islam or simply from culture?
