Use your gifts to serve Allah and others
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given us a heavy responsibility.”
Allah has chosen Muslims with God-given qualities, a manageable deen, Ibrahim’s legacy, and a shared identity, so they must use their abilities, fulfill daily obligations, and take responsibility for conveying Islam and responding to suffering.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Distinguishes Allah’s preference for angels and messengers from His qualification-based choosing of believers.
- Explains that Islam removes hardship and connects Muslims to Ibrahim’s demanding legacy.
- Emphasizes Muslim identity and accountability as witnesses responsible for conveying the message.
- Highlights salah, zakah, and holding fast to Allah as central responsibilities.
- Urges listeners to discover and use their talents in service of Allah and others.
- Calls for responsibility toward injustice and suffering, including making dua for Palestine and Sudan.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given us a heavy responsibility. Strive in the way of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, in the way that He deserves.”
“We have to find it and utilize it in the way of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in one way or the other.”
“Maybe we can't do with our hands, but we have to remember that it is still our responsibility to at least make dua.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah has chosen Muslims for a meaningful responsibility and has given us qualities we can use for good. The example of Ibrahim teaches that difficult tests can be met with Allah’s help, and our Muslim identity connects us to a worldwide community. We should keep salah central, purify our wealth through zakah, and hold firmly to Allah. Each of us should look for a talent, cooking, writing, speaking, earning, or something else, and use it to serve others and the deen. When we cannot personally change suffering, we should still care, make dua, and refuse to treat responsibility as someone else’s problem.
- What is one ability Allah gave you that could help someone else?
- What can our family do when we hear about people suffering far away?
- Which prayer or good habit can we strengthen this week?
