Truthful witness requires courage and justice
“Speaking the truth guides repentance, healing, and reconciliation.”
Muslims should live as a middle-way community that bears truthful witness, stands for justice despite consequences, and builds social trust through the examples of the Prophet Muhammad and Muhammad Ali.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Defines Muslims’ calling as middle-way witnesses to truth, beginning with the shahada.
- Explains how truth honors Allah, enables repentance and healing, and builds social cohesion.
- Critiques misinformation and political favoritism while urging principled justice.
- Presents Muhammad Ali’s conscientious objection, Muslim identity, and peace advocacy as examples of courageous witness.
- Encourages support for Muhammad Ali’s stamp and renewed commitment to truth, dignity, and justice.
In the khateeb's words
“Speaking the truth guides repentance, healing, and reconciliation. In other words, the truth is the first step towards repentance and renewal.”
“Heroes become heroes because they say things that are important that very few people are willing to say. And they're ready to take the consequences of their words and their actions.”
“He used that fame to help promote peace, to free people who were in prison, political prisoners, and he would reconcile between communities.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that our faith calls us to bear witness to truth, beginning with our belief in Allah and His messenger. Being a community of the middle way means letting Islam shape our opinions and becoming a trustworthy example for others. He explained that truthfulness honors Allah, opens the door to healing, and builds trust between people. He presented Muhammad Ali as an example of someone who stood by his convictions despite personal costs, took pride in his Muslim identity, and used his influence to promote peace. He ended by asking Allah to help us keep our promises, stand firmly for justice, and give strength and pride to younger generations.
- What is one promise you can keep this week that would help someone trust you?
- When is telling the truth difficult, and what would help you find the courage?
- How could you stand up for someone at school while still being fair and kind?
