Islam calls us to protect and serve
“Your property, your honor, your dignity, your wealth, everything is in peace from me.”
Islam is a submission to Allah expressed through peace, protecting people and their rights, and actively serving society to dispel misconceptions.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines Islam as peace and submission, then distinguishes basic Islam and iman from ethical conduct.
- Uses hadith to define a good Muslim as someone whose tongue and hands keep others safe.
- Explains the objectives of Shariah as preserving religion, life, intellect, wealth, and progeny.
- Uses interfaith dialogue and volunteering as examples of building communal strength through service.
- Urges Muslims to educate themselves, engage in schools, social media, civic life, and the economy.
- Concludes that good deeds return benefit to the doer and calls for action against poverty and domestic violence.
In the khateeb's words
“It means you are in peace from me. Your property, your honor, your dignity, your wealth, everything is in peace from me.”
“The best Muslim, the proper Muslim, is the one from his tongue and the hands. Other Muslims are safe.”
“Be part of civic engagements. Be part of our education system.”
“Whatever you do good to others. In fact you are doing good to yourself.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Islam means peace and submission to Allah, but those ideas must appear in how safely and kindly we treat other people. He explained that Shariah aims to protect faith, life, minds, wealth, and families, not threaten society. Muslims can correct misunderstandings by learning, serving neighbors, volunteering, participating in civic life, and representing Islam well. Even small acts of goodness can build trust and return blessings to us, so we should work together against poverty, domestic violence, and other harms.
- What is one way our family can make a neighbor feel safe and respected this week?
- Where could we volunteer or serve in our community?
- How can we show people what Islam means through our actions?
