Muslims belong by serving their neighbors
“When we move into a society, when we're living in a society, we give back to that society.”
Muslims demonstrate that they belong in America by investing in their neighbors and communities through hospitality, social welfare, and service rooted in the Prophet’s sunnah.
The khutbah in 4 steps
- Khadijah’s description of Muhammad’s community service is presented as a sign of divine help.
- Social investment creates neighbors who defend Muslims during anti-Muslim hostility.
- Abu Bakr’s attempted emigration illustrates civic trust earned through service.
- Listeners are urged to treat America as home and give back through hospitality and local investment.
In the khateeb's words
“If you are taking resources out of the community, if you are building businesses that don't better the community but poison the community, I'll leave that at that.”
“When you cook dinner tonight, send a plate over next door.”
“When we move into a society, when we're living in a society, we give back to that society.”
“But if you don't use that wealth to better this community, you're not bettering it for your children. And you're not bettering it for your children's children.”
For the dinner table
Sheikh Mikaeel reminded us that following the Prophet includes caring for people beyond our own family. He described how Khadija recognized the Prophet’s generosity and how someone outside the Muslim community stood up for Abu Bakr because he helped others. He encouraged us to welcome neighbors, learn who they are, and begin with something simple, like sharing a plate of food. Our kindness should come from following the sunnah, not from expecting something in return. By using our time, skills, and money to help people in need, we can strengthen the community our children will grow up in.
- Who at school or on our street might appreciate a little extra kindness this week?
- What food would you like to help prepare and share with a neighbor?
- What is one thing our family could do together to help someone in need?
