Contentment is richer than worldly success
“Fixate on what you have rather than what you haven't been given.”
Because worldly wealth, status, and achievement are temporary tests, believers should cultivate gratitude and contentment, use their blessings to benefit others, and prioritize the akhirah over material comparison while still taking their share of dunya.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Calls to tawhid, taqwa, sunnah, truthfulness, ihsan, and supplication before introducing Qarun.
- Uses Qarun, Pharaoh, and Shaytan to show how self-importance and arrogance distort gratitude.
- Connects Qarun’s display to social-media filters, leased luxury, envy, and worldly deception.
- Reframes rizq as broad everyday blessing and true richness as contentment rather than possessions.
- Gives three takeaways: stop fixating on others, use blessings to benefit people, and prioritize the akhirah.
- Concludes with accountability, supplication, and prioritizing the akhirah without abandoning one’s share of dunya.
In the khateeb's words
“all of your supposed greatness is nothing in front of Allah if you are not ready to ascribe that bounty and that blessing to Allah”
“fixate on what you have rather than what you haven't been given because you don't know if that extra and that excess could have become a curse for you instead of a blessing”
“how can I position myself so that I can leave behind a legacy of benefit that can span multiple generations”
“utilize the majority of the blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the pursuit of your success in the akhirah”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that wealth, status, skills, and polished social-media images can make us forget who gave us our blessings. Qarun’s story teaches that arrogance and envy can turn gifts into a test, while true richness is contentment of the heart. We should notice everyday blessings, stop measuring our lives against other people’s displays, and use what Allah gives us to benefit others. Most of our effort should serve the akhirah, while we still responsibly take our share of this world.
- What is one ordinary blessing you noticed today?
- How could something you are good at help another person?
- What is one small choice that could make your akhirah a higher priority this week?
