Build a legacy Allah remembers
“Earn that recognition with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala through the deeds that you do when no one else is watching.”
A believer's true legacy is not public recognition but Allah's remembrance, built through sincere hidden worship and steadfast faith.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Invites reflection on balancing worldly responsibilities with preparation for the Hereafter.
- Uses Musa and the anonymous hairdresser of Pharaoh's daughter to show hidden believers can attain exalted status.
- Rejects fame, large funerals, and comparison as measures of spiritual worth.
- Presents sincere private deeds and dhikr as the true accomplishment.
- Reassures ordinary parents, volunteers, teachers, and companions that unnoticed service may be greatly honored by Allah.
- Begins a closing story about Umar and unknown casualties to reinforce that recognition by Allah matters most.
In the khateeb's words
“It's not that you chase legacy, but that you build legacy. Legacy is actually not supposed to be external. It's built internally.”
“Earn that recognition with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala through the deeds that you do when no one else is watching.”
“It's not about how you're going to be remembered, it's about how you're going to be resurrected by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah asks us to pause amid busy life and ask whether we are investing only in this world or also in the Hereafter. Shaykh Arif Syed explains that a person's real legacy is not fame, a large funeral, or being known by many people; it is being known and remembered by Allah. He illustrates this with the anonymous hairdresser who believed in Allah and remained steadfast before Pharaoh, earning honor in the Hereafter. Even small acts done sincerely, remembering Allah, serving others, teaching, parenting, or helping the masjid, can have great value. We should stop comparing ourselves with famous people and focus on sincere deeds when no one is watching.
- What is one good deed you could do this week without telling anyone?
- How can our family remember Allah more regularly?
- Why might an ordinary person be very important in Allah's sight?
