Gratitude requires worship, not just words
A grateful heart, expressed through remembrance, worship, and obedience rather than mere words, is a central path to the goodness of this world and the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces a hadith about four qualities that bring goodness in this world and the Hereafter, urging listeners to assess themselves.
- Explains gratitude as recognizing Allah's blessings instead of attributing success solely to personal achievement.
- Uses Quranic reminders and examples of Nuh and the Prophet's worship to show that gratitude requires devoted practice.
- Warns against neglecting the mosque and prioritizing work, possessions, or sinful entertainment over worship.
- Argues that hadith should be implemented in life rather than merely read or collected.
- Relates Mu'adh ibn Jabal's encounter with the Prophet and teaches the dua asking for help with remembrance, gratitude, and worship.
- Closes with supplications and a reminder that prayer restrains indecency.
In the khateeb's words
“if you have one shelf ten fifteen books in it and people are reading it and applying that in their life that's more beneficial than the library”
“you need to sit down with yourself after listening to this hadith you need to sit down with yourself you need to put your head down and think do you have them or no and you need to be honest with yourself”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that a thankful heart is one of the qualities that brings goodness in this life and the next. We should recognize that our health, families, abilities, work, and daily opportunities are gifts from Allah, not achievements we own by ourselves. Gratitude should show up in prayer, remembrance, and using what we have in obedience, not only in saying thank you. The speaker encouraged us to learn from the Prophet's worship and repeat the dua asking Allah to help us remember Him, thank Him, and worship Him well. After Jumu'ah, each family member can name one blessing and choose one grateful action to practice.
- What is one blessing you often overlook, and how could you thank Allah for it this week?
- When could we say the dua asking Allah to help us remember and thank Him?
- What is one way our family can turn something we learned into action instead of only talking about it?
