True freedom comes from relying on Allah

“The answer was not trying to go harder and harder, but letting go and letting Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala into our lives.”

The khateeb, at 5:32

In one sentence

True strength, freedom, and wealth come from recognizing complete dependence on Allah and surrendering outcomes to Him rather than trying to control life alone.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Names daily overwhelm and the false promise of control and self-reliance.
  2. Contrasts arrogant self-sufficiency through Abu Jahl and Qarun with prophetic neediness through Musa and Muhammad.
  3. Uses Quranic verses, prophetic supplications, and a hadith qudsi to show dependence on Allah.
  4. Reframes freedom, wealth, and happiness as contentment and connection to Allah rather than material control.
  5. Offers four practices: surrender outcomes, turn stress into worship, ask Allah for help, and reduce comparison.
  6. Closes by reframing trials as growth and urging listeners to hand one burden to Allah at a time.
Try this week
Stop trying to control every outcome and repeatedly say, "Wa ufawwidu amri illa Allah."
Turn moments of overwhelm into worship by calling on a name of Allah that helps you, such as "Ya Fattah," "Allah al-Shafi," or "Allah al-Kafi."
Ask Allah directly for help instead of pretending to have everything under control, using Nuh's plea, "Inni maghlubun fantasir."
Reduce social-media comparison and recognize the gifts Allah has already given you.
When overwhelmed, identify one thing to hand over to Allah and consciously expect His sakina.

For the dinner table

Shaykh Omar reminds us that we can become exhausted when we think we have to manage everything ourselves. Everything we have is a gift from Allah, and needing His help is part of being human. Trusting Allah means making our effort and handing the results over to Him. When we feel overwhelmed, we can speak honestly to Allah, ask for help, and call upon His names. He also encourages us to stop comparing our lives with other people’s lives so we can notice our blessings and grow in gratitude and contentment.

  1. What is one worry you could bring to Allah in dua tonight?
  2. What gift in your life do you sometimes overlook when you compare yourself with others?
  3. When something feels hard, what could doing your part and trusting Allah look like?
