Rely on Allah while taking practical means
“You make dua before you engage in something, while you engage in it.”
The khutbah uses the Battle of Badr to teach that believers should rely on Allah through dua while taking practical means, consulting and cooperating, then intensify worship during Ramadan's last ten nights.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Badr as Yawm al-Furqan and recounts the Muslims' disadvantage.
- Draws the lesson that victory comes from Allah, not worldly strength.
- Urges dua as a first recourse, alongside practical means and consultation.
- Calls for shared work, sacrifice, and cooperation in the Muslim community.
- Turns to the last ten nights with increased worship and family participation.
- Recommends qiyam, tahajjud, dua, Quran recitation, and i'tikaf where possible.
In the khateeb's words
“And from these great lessons, brothers and sisters, is that Nasr, victory is from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, and it is not based upon materialistic things.”
“It is not the last resort, brothers and sisters. You make dua before you engage in something, while you engage in it.”
“So it's very important that we seek Laylat Al-Qadr by making ibadah, staying up at night, making qiyam, making dua, reciting the Quran.”
For the dinner table
Shaykh Ali Salah reflected on the Battle of Badr, reminding us that victory comes from Allah and that we need His help. He explained that the Prophet combined heartfelt dua with practical preparation and consultation with his companions. The Prophet also shared in their effort, teaching us to work together and carry our share of responsibility. As the last ten nights of Ramadan approached, the khateeb encouraged more prayer, Quran recitation, and dua while seeking Laylat Al-Qadr. He reminded us to include our families in worship and ask Allah to pardon us.
- What is something you could make dua about before you begin it tomorrow?
- When has someone’s advice helped you make a better choice?
- What act of worship would you like us to do together during the last ten nights?
