Unity does not require identical thoughts

“Unity of action does not mean or does not require the unity of thoughts.”

The khateeb, at 22:14

In one sentence

Because Allah created human diversity and differences in interpretation, Muslims should preserve love and unity of action by respecting disagreement, prioritizing essentials, building relationships, and helping the suffering.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Opens with gratitude for safety, health, food, and arriving early for Jumu'ah, contrasting these blessings with suffering in Gaza.
  2. Reflects on Quranic signs in diverse creation and human differences, emphasizing mutual dependence.
  3. Uses examples from Abu Bakr and Umar, Dawud and Sulayman, and Imam al-Shafi'i to distinguish principled disagreement from personal hostility.
  4. Urges listeners to love people despite disagreement, avoid slander and broken relationships, and seek hearts over winning arguments.
  5. Calls for unity of action despite differing thoughts, self-accounting about attending Jumu'ah, and building brotherhood in the masjid.
  6. Closes with calls to help suffering Muslims, support Palestine, share Islam's beauty online, and remain united.

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah reminded us to thank Allah for safety, health, food, and the chance to gather for Jumu'ah. Allah made people different in languages, colors, abilities, and ways of thinking, and those differences can help us serve one another. Disagreement should not become hatred, backbiting, or broken relationships; we can reject an idea while still respecting and loving the person. We should come to the masjid ready to learn, grow spiritually, and build brotherhood, then act together around what matters most. The khateeb also asked us to support people suffering in Palestine and throughout the Muslim world, and to show Islam's beauty through helpful action and responsible social media.

  1. When have you disagreed with someone but still shown them love and respect?
  2. What is one way our family can build brotherhood at the masjid?
  3. How can we help people who are suffering this week?
