Good intentions do not replace Sunnah

“It is better than spending the whole night in nawafil against the sunnah of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.”

The khateeb, at 18:28

In one sentence

Because Islam is complete, Muslims should follow the Prophet’s Sunnah and avoid adding unsubstantiated religious practices, even when they appear more pious.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Establishes Islam as complete and rejects additions or removals.
  2. Explains why bid'ah is worse than ordinary sin because it can appear righteous.
  3. Uses examples from Sa'id ibn Musayyab and Imam Malik to show good intentions do not override Sunnah.
  4. Urges holding firmly to the Prophet's Sunnah and warns about historical deviation.
  5. Applies the principle to special worship on the 15th of Sha'ban, Rajab practices, and aqiqah.
  6. Concludes with prayers and Ramadan program announcements.

Avoid singling out the 15th night of Sha'ban or nights in Rajab for special prayers without authentic evidence.
Increase fasting, prayer, Quran recitation, and other good deeds throughout the month rather than fixing them to an invented date.
Follow the stated Sunnah for aqiqah: two sheep for a son and one for a daughter.

For the dinner table

The khutbah taught that Islam is complete and that worship should follow the Prophet's Sunnah. It warned that bid'ah can look like extra goodness while quietly moving people away from authentic guidance. The speaker encouraged sincere repentance from sins and careful avoidance of invented religious practices. He especially cautioned against assigning special prayers to particular nights without reliable evidence. The family takeaway is to value faithful, modest worship over religious practices chosen simply because they seem more impressive.

  1. How can we tell whether a religious practice is truly part of the Sunnah?
  2. Why might doing a smaller authentic act be better than doing a larger invented one?
  3. What worship habit could we practice consistently this month?
