Every blessing comes with a responsibility

“Within every blessing is an assignment.”

The khateeb, at 15:25

In one sentence

Every blessing from Allah carries an assignment and a limited season, so believers should recognize its source, fulfill its responsibility promptly, and regularly hold themselves accountable.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Imagines every dua being answered and asks what Allah expects afterward.
  2. Uses Prophet Sulayman’s gratitude in Surah al-Naml to frame blessings as tests and assignments.
  3. Applies the principle to children, parents, wealth, health, and personal abilities.
  4. Warns against postponing responsibilities because every blessing has a season.
  5. Calls listeners to ask what Allah expects from them right now.
  6. Assigns muhasabah and one concrete improvement between this Friday and next Friday, then closes with condolences and dua.
Try this week
Practice muhasabah regularly by holding yourself accountable before being held to account.
Choose one responsibility to improve between this Friday and next Friday.
Read one Quran verse daily or teach one verse daily to your children.
Call your parents throughout the week; if they have passed, make dua, donate on their behalf, visit their grave, or see their friends.
Use wealth, health, speech, and other abilities in ways that serve Allah and benefit others.

For the dinner table

Allah gives us many blessings, our bodies, families, abilities, health, and wealth, and each one comes with a responsibility. Like Prophet Sulayman, we should recognize that blessings come from Allah and ask how we can use them gratefully. Because blessings and opportunities can change, we should not postpone caring for our parents, raising our children well, or serving others. This week, we can look honestly at our lives, choose one improvement, and keep asking Allah for help.

  1. What is one blessing you have that also gives you a responsibility?
  2. Who could you call or help this week because of a blessing Allah gave you?
  3. What is one small improvement you can make before next Friday?
