Small acts can change the whole community
“Oftentimes we fall into an error of miscalculation because of how small something seems or how small it is in terms of duration.”
Small consistent deeds and the responsible use of personal privilege can profoundly affect the wider community, so Muslims must actively intervene against harm and advocate justice for everyone.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with taqwa and the need to live and die in submission to Allah.
- Shows how small, consistent acts of worship and service can produce enormous consequences.
- Uses the ship parable to argue that shared structures require intervention when harm threatens everyone.
- Explores privilege, social systems, and the responsibility to use influence rather than remain neutral.
- Calls Muslims to advocate proactively for justice and rights for all people.
- Closes with supplication for guidance, relief, and a good ending.
In the khateeb's words
“the point behind all of this oftentimes we fall into an error of miscalculation because of how small something seems or how small it is in terms of duration”
“they are either destroyed together or saved together there's no third outcome”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that small deeds can have huge consequences when we do them consistently for Allah. Like people sharing one ship, our choices affect everyone around us, so ignoring harm is not true neutrality. Allah gives each person different privileges and abilities, and He will ask how we used what was in our hands. We should use our time, influence, and connections to help people, seek justice for everyone, and represent Islam with mercy.
- What is one small good deed we can do consistently?
- Who around us might need us to use our “paddle” to help?
- How can our family stand for justice for all people?
