A stronger community needs everyone
“We're lacking people who are willing to take on those ideas and see them through.”
A healthy Muslim community requires a mutual covenant in which masjids fulfill their responsibilities and every Muslim shows up, contributes, initiates, follows revelation, and holds themselves accountable.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Argues that masjids and communities need a clear mutual covenant with defined responsibilities, measurable progress, and accountability.
- Defines mosque and imam responsibilities: balanced teaching, welcoming service, listening to needs, programming, leadership, and unity.
- Presents presence, contribution beyond money, and championing initiatives as the first three community duties.
- Completes the five duties with adherence to Quranic teaching and personal accountability before Allah.
- Urges especially young Muslims to contribute, address community gaps, and build a stronger legacy for children.
- Closes with prayers for oppressed Muslims and announcements about Al-Aqsa, a market, and prayer-line etiquette.
In the khateeb's words
“It can't be a one-way road. It can't be a one-way promise, where the institutions and the imams within them promise to provide one, two, three, four, and five. However, the community doesn't have to promise anything.”
“I don't want your pockets. I need you, and I need your family. I need you to come and actually participate and help keep things running and volunteer and stand there and help planning.”
“What we don't, what we lack are champions. We're lacking people who are willing to take on those ideas and see them through.”
“we actually have to take this upon ourselves and practice it”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that belonging to the Muslim community comes with responsibilities we share. Masjids and imams should teach, welcome people, listen to their needs, and serve the community, while each of us also does our part. He described five responsibilities: being present, contributing, taking initiative, following Allah's teachings, and holding ourselves accountable. Our contributions can include time, knowledge, effort, and care as well as money, and simply showing up can matter even when we feel we have little to offer. He encouraged us, especially young people, to help meet community needs and work together toward a better future for our children.
- How could you help someone feel welcome the next time we gather at the masjid?
- What skill or bit of time could our family share to help others?
