Four habits that lead to true success

“The first thing will be asked in the day of judgment is about our salah.”

The khateeb, at 13:34

In one sentence

True success in this life and the next, especially for the youth, comes from four habits: putting salah first, valuing time, living with the Quran, and keeping righteous company.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Opening praise, shahadah, and the hadith qudsi that what Allah made obligatory is most beloved to Him
  2. Foundation of faith: la ilaha illa Allah as the key to Jannah and the five pillars
  3. Habit 1: put prayer first, sleep early for Fajr, pray in the masjid, prepare properly with unhurried wudu
  4. Habit 2: guard your time, social media vs. minutes given to prayer; Allah swore by time; self-accounting between prayers
  5. Habit 3: live with the Quran, read a portion daily after salah; the Prophet's character was the Quran
  6. Habit 4: righteous companionship, a person follows the religion of his close friend
  7. Second khutbah: salawat, dua for the Muslims, then iqamah and prayer recitation
Try this week
Sleep early enough to wake for Fajr; make the intention, wudu, two rak'ah, zikr, and sleeping dua before bed on the right side
Pray Fajr in the masjid and put prayer before games and social media
Do wudu slowly and completely, including washing the feet fully, as preparation to stand before Allah
Take one or two minutes of self-accounting between each pair of daily prayers
Read 5, 10 minutes of Quran (a daily portion, e.g. after Fajr) every day
Check screen time and compare it honestly with time given to prayer
Cut ties with companions who pull you away from the masjid, salah, or Quran; choose righteous friends

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb, Sheikh Tarek Morsi, reminded us that real success in this life and the next starts with four simple habits. He said prayer comes first, it is the first thing Allah will ask us about, so we should guard it like the most important meeting of our day. He also urged us to value our time, because every minute is a trust from Allah that we can never get back. We were encouraged to live with the Quran by reading, memorizing, and understanding it daily. Finally, he warned us to choose our friends wisely, because the people around us shape our faith. Let us pick one small step from this khutbah to practice together as a family this week.

  1. What is one thing you can do tonight to make Fajr easier tomorrow?
  2. Which friend helps you remember Allah, and how can you thank them?
  3. If you had ten extra minutes a day, what part of the Quran would you read?
