Serve others without expecting repayment
“You don't need to fulfill all of somebody's needs in order to help them a little bit.”
Believers should emulate Musa by serving people selflessly, seeking forgiveness regularly, and asking Allah humbly for whatever good He chooses to send.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Musa’s accidental killing, flight from Egypt, and immediate repentance.
- Draws a lesson about seeking tawbah even after unintended harm or difficult circumstances.
- Describes Musa helping two women at the well quickly and without expecting repayment.
- Explains Musa’s dua as a humble, open-ended request for whatever good Allah provides.
- Applies prophetic service to homelessness, community support, and escaping insulated social circles.
- Concludes by urging proactive service, frequent dua, night prayer, and contentment with Allah’s provision.
In the khateeb's words
“Because we don't want a transactional relationship with Allah. I feel like I'm in a deficit, and that's why I go back to Him.”
“You don't need to fulfill all of somebody's needs in order to help them a little bit.”
“the poor and the needy and the weak and the oppressed, they are owed whatever I can give them.”
“we need more selflessness and we need more humility with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
For the dinner table
Musa left Egypt in danger and with very little, yet he turned to Allah and asked forgiveness even though the killing was accidental. At the well, he noticed two women who needed help and acted quickly without asking what he would get in return. His dua asked Allah for whatever good He would send, teaching us to trust Allah rather than treating worship as a bargain. The khutbah encourages us to notice needs outside our comfortable circles, offer whatever help we can, and keep asking Allah with humility. It also reminds us to seek forgiveness, pray in the last third of the night, and accept Allah’s khair with an open heart.
- What is one need you noticed this week that you could meet with a small act of service?
- When do we ask Allah for a specific outcome, and what might it mean to ask for khair instead?
- What comfortable bubble could our family step outside to show kindness responsibly?
