Build your akhirah through generosity

Khadeeja, Al-Noor · Kamil Uddin

“When you give, you're not doing that person a favor.”

The khateeb, at 6:02

In one sentence

Islam expands the believer's vision beyond this worldly, secular existence to the akhirah, and generosity, beginning at home and extending through dhikr, charity, and ultimately the Prophet's intercession, is the civilizational value that builds that greater existence.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Islam is a non-secular worldview: deeds in this world plant trees in Jannah and the grave is a passage to greater existence, not non-existence
  2. Generosity as a civilizational value from Ibrahim (AS), illustrated by the hadith of the generous man and the miser in iron armor
  3. Charity is broader than money: dhikr is sadaqah, sadaqah is due on every joint, and the world endures only while people say 'Allah, Allah'
  4. The Prophet's training of the Sahaba, exemplified by his calm response to the Jew who mockingly said 'as-samu alaik' to him and Aisha's anger
  5. Fiqh al-awlawiyyat: generosity must start at home, with wives, children, parents, before extending to the masjid, orphans, and the poor
  6. The Prophet's generosity continues after death: in the grave's questioning and through his shafa'ah (intercession) on the Day of Judgment
  7. Closing dua for tawfiq and to drink from the Prophet's hawd without being turned away
Try this week
Increase dhikr (subhanallah, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illa Allah) especially during these blessed days, treating it as sadaqah
Practice generosity starting at home, with wives, children, parents, and loved ones, before giving outside
Give to the masjid, orphanages, and the poor after the home foundation is set
Give in both good times and hard times (fi as-sarraa' wad-darraa'), not only when comfortable or at death's door
Live so that your actions, not memorized words, answer for you in the grave
