Isra wal-mi'raj teaches hope through hardship
“Before the good times, before the rainbow, there's always a storm.”
Isra wal-mi'raj teaches that Allah consoles believers through hardship and calls them to prepare spiritually, resist worldly distraction, and strive against the self.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Prepare in Rajab and Sha'ban so Ramadan is a harvest rather than the starting point.
- Frame Isra wal-mi'raj as consolation following the deaths of Khadijah and Abu Talib and the rejection at Ta'if.
- Explain the miraculous journey's bodily and spiritual nature, including purification, wisdom, and faith.
- Trace encounters involving Madinah, Musa, Isa, the Ifrit, Dajjal, the dunya, Iblis, and worldly distraction.
- Recast jihad as jihad al-nafs through fasting, honoring parents, attending the mosque, spending, and doing good.
- Close with prayers for mercy, Ramadan, Gaza, al-Aqsa, and guidance, followed by salah.
In the khateeb's words
“Isra wal-mi'raj Was a gift to Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam It was to console him Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam In one of the most difficult times of his life”
“Allah will find you a way out Allah will give you that guiding light And before the good times Before the rainbow There's always a storm”
“When you're good To your parents You're doing Jihad An-Nafs When you come To the masjid This is Jihad An-Nafs When you spend In the path of Allah This is Jihad An-Nafs”
For the dinner table
The khateeb encouraged us to prepare for Ramadan now, like planting seeds and watering them before harvest. He described Isra wal-Mi'raj, the Prophet Muhammad’s night journey and ascent to the heavens, as a gift of comfort after deep loss and painful rejection. He reminded us that the Prophet kept trusting Allah through those hardships, and encouraged us to do the same. Through accounts from the journey, he urged us to remember the akhirat instead of letting this world take over our attention. He also explained that striving for Allah includes everyday efforts such as fasting, being good to our parents, giving, and treating people well.
- What small habit could we start together to get ready for Ramadan?
- When someone feels sad or rejected, how could our family help them feel supported?
- What is one kind thing you could do at home this week, even when it feels difficult?
