Human excellence requires honest self-accountability
Human excellence is achieved through lifelong tazkiyah, fulfilling obligations to Allah, honestly confronting our blind spots, and embodying the Prophet's rahmah through empathy and service to others.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Human beings can rise to excellence or fall low, and the nafs can pull them toward evil.
- Tazkiyah is a lifelong process requiring humility, self-knowledge, and honest accountability.
- Rahmah means recognizing others' dignity, emotions, struggles, and need for room to grow.
- Parents should read children's emotional cues and interpret teenagers' independence with empathy.
- Purification includes fulfilling the fara'id, correcting relational harm, and seeking sincere feedback.
- Living prophetic teachings through helping others is more transformative than merely accumulating religious knowledge.
- The khutbah closes with supplication and a funeral announcement for a community member.
In the khateeb's words
“That doesn't mean we promote stagnation. That means we don't judge people, that we're not harsh towards people, that we allow people that room to grow.”
“Ask people who have no conflicts of interest, who are not your enemies and who are not your besties, but people who will give you an honest, truthful feedback as to who you are and what your story is.”
“To walk with someone to fulfill one of their needs, to solve one of their problems, to help them get a job, to give someone a ride.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that becoming better people is a lifelong journey, not something completed once. We should be humble enough to notice our weaknesses and seek honest feedback from people we trust. We also need to treat others with mercy, remembering that they may be carrying struggles we cannot see. For parents, this means listening carefully to children and responding to teenagers with understanding rather than assuming defiance. Our faith becomes real when we fulfill our obligations to Allah and use what we know to help people around us.
- What is one way someone could give you honest feedback kindly?
- How can we show mercy when a sibling or friend seems difficult?
- Whose need could we help fulfill this week?
