Follow the Prophet’s example in how you speak
“Be the protection of your family, of your children.”
Words have transformative power, and Muslims should follow the Prophet Muhammad’s example by communicating with truth, attentiveness, emotional control, gentleness, and protective care for their families and suffering communities.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Words shape individuals, nations, identities, and civilizations, illustrated through Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali.
- The Qur’an is presented as Islam’s enduring linguistic miracle and the Prophet Muhammad as history’s greatest communicator.
- The Prophet’s communication combined attentive body language, concise speech, truthfulness, emotional control, gentleness, strength, and uplifting humor.
- Listeners are urged to become safe, protective, and trustworthy people within their families, especially in how they treat children and spouses.
- The suffering of Sudan’s families is used to call the ummah toward greater prayer, charity, organized strength, and practical support.
In the khateeb's words
“Words contain the power to change a person's entire life in a matter of moments. For there is no greater power than the power to shift someone's heart.”
“The most important thing, if you take one thing away from today. You need to be that person in your family that is the safety and the protection of your family.”
“Be the protection of your family, of your children. This is key. This is how we will build strong families.”
“We have to do something about this. This is not acceptable. I won't accept this. This is not the Islam that I know.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that words can change people and even shape whole communities. The Prophet Muhammad showed this power through truthful, gentle, attentive, and emotionally controlled communication. At home, we should protect our children and spouses, avoid public shame, and speak about problems directly and privately. The sermon also reminds us that Muslims should care about suffering families around the world, especially in Sudan, through prayer, donations, and meaningful work. Our goal is to live so that our families and communities experience us as sources of safety, strength, and mercy.
- When do you feel most listened to by someone, and what do they do?
- How can our family become a safer place for someone who made a mistake?
- What is one helpful action we can take for people suffering far away?
