Lead with sincerity, effort, and trust
“You don't have to be in a position of power to be a leader.”
The khutbah argues that sincere leadership and faithful planning require intentional effort, prayer, accountability, perseverance, and contentment with Allah’s decree.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Frames Friday gathering as a source of mercy, tranquility, and divine remembrance.
- Presents the Prophet as a leader who developed every companion, not only elites.
- Connects leadership to ikhlas, right intention, and a morally sound heart.
- Uses Mu'adh, Ja'far, and the Battle of Mu'tah to illustrate humility, sacrifice, love, and responsibility.
- Explains that Muslim life in America requires deliberate planning to practice deen.
- Offers a three-part response to plans: pursue benefit, seek Allah's help, and persist.
- Uses Ka'b ibn Malik and the death of Ibrahim to contrast accountability with contentment when events exceed control.
In the khateeb's words
“The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he stressed on the importance of having ikhlas, having sincerity in anything that you do.”
“And you don't have to be in a position of power to be a leader. You can be a leader at home, you can be a leader on the basketball court”
“when you make a mistake don't be that individual that always has to blame everybody else”
“the eyes they shed tears the heart grieves and we say only what pleases our Lord indeed O Ibrahim we are saddened by your departure”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah taught that leadership is not about having a title; it is about sincere service wherever Allah has placed us. The Prophet prepared people by caring for each person and teaching sincerity, accountability, courage, and love. When we make plans, we should pursue what benefits us, ask Allah for help, work steadily, and not give up too quickly. If we make a mistake, we should own it rather than blame others; if something painful happens beyond our control, we can grieve while remaining content with Allah's wisdom. Our family takeaway is to act with sincere hearts and trust Allah with the results.
- Where could you show leadership at home, school, or with friends this week?
- What is one goal you can plan for, ask Allah's help with, and keep working toward?
- How can we be honest about mistakes and kind when plans change?
