True wealth is what you spend for Allah

“Nothing amazes Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala more than a servant.”

The khateeb, at 37:32

In one sentence

True wealth is what you enjoy and spend for Allah's pleasure, so stop hoarding, stop shortchanging Allah, raise righteous children, and invest in your tomorrow (the hereafter) before death seals the book.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening recitation of Surah al-Mulk and praises for gathering at Jumu'ah
  2. Reflection on the recent qurbani and Ibrahim's lifelong search for Allah and tawakkul
  3. Ibrahim's dua for righteous offspring versus our dunya-focused duas; parents' duty to instill iman in children
  4. Stop living to please people who will forget you; live to please Allah as Ibrahim did
  5. Rebuke of shortchanging Allah, sending minimal qurbani money abroad while freely spending on cars and houses
  6. Story of Ibrahim and the guest who would not say Bismillah; Allah's patience and generosity even toward unbelievers
  7. Hadith that your wealth is what you enjoy, neither hoard nor be extravagant
  8. Closing on Surah al-Hashr and Surah al-Munafiqun: prepare what you send forth for tomorrow and spend before death comes
Try this week
Pay the full local cost of your qurbani (e.g., $400-500) instead of sending a token amount abroad while earning an American income
Make dua for righteous, pious children rather than only worldly success for them
Actively instill iman in your children, teach them Islam and bring them to the masjid
Spend on your family and children, which itself counts as sadaqah
Enjoy and use your wealth rather than hoarding it, while avoiding extravagance
Give to the masjid and charity while alive and healthy, not only on the deathbed
Regularly assess what you are sending forth for the hereafter (sadaqah jariyah, children who will make dua for you)

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah, given just after Eid al-Adha, reminded us about the example of Prophet Ibrahim, who spent his whole life seeking Allah and trusting Him completely. The speaker challenged us to ask whether we are living to please people, who will quickly forget us, or to please Allah. He pointed out how easily we spend hundreds of dollars every month on cars and houses, yet hesitate to give a few hundred dollars once a year for qurbani or charity. He also urged parents to pray for righteous children and to teach them iman, because they are our investment for after we die. The khutbah closed with a powerful reminder from Surah al-Munafiqun: don't let wealth and family distract you from remembering Allah, and spend in His way before death comes, because once it does, there is no going back.

  1. If you could only be remembered for one thing after you're gone, what would you want it to be?
  2. Ibrahim looked at the sun, moon, and stars before finding Allah, where do you see signs of Allah around you?
