Dhul Hijjah offers the best days

“The best days of this dunya are the 10 days of the month of Dhul Hijjah.”

The khateeb, at 5:02

In one sentence

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are the best days of this world, better even than Ramadan in reward, so believers must prepare for and seize them with worship, fasting, repentance, and reconciliation.

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Recalls the post-Ramadan longing, then poses the hook: a chance better than Ramadan
  2. Hadith establishing the ten days of Dhul Hijjah as the best days of the dunya, superior even to jihad
  3. Argument from daily life: we always pick the better option, so do so spiritually; prepare as for Ramadan and sacrifice distractions
  4. The two greatest days within the ten: Arafah (most freed from hell) and Yawm al-Nahr/Eid al-Adha
  5. Action two: justice between people, return rights, forgive others; oppression is darkness on Judgment Day (Mu'adh hadith)
  6. Action three: escalate good deeds (salah on time, masjid, sunnah, adhkar until Duha), fast the ten days especially Arafah, increase takbir, and make sincere tawbah
  7. Second segment: recitation from Surah al-Hajj and Surah al-Fajr
Try this week
Prepare mentally and schedule worship for the ten days as one prepares for Ramadan
Make a personal sacrifice (e.g., phone or other distractions) to stay focused during the days
Audit the heart for minor shirk, putting money, showing off, or anything above the love of Allah
Return rights to anyone wronged and forgive anyone who wronged you; apologize to children, parents, coworkers, employees
Level up salah habits: pray on time, then in the masjid, then add sunnah prayers, then adhkar after Fajr until Duha
Fast the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah, especially the day of Arafah
Increase takbir and dhikr (Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah, subhanallah) throughout the days
Make sincere tawbah with regret, intending a real change of life
