Sadaqah is more than money

“When I come to any gathering, whether it is a masjid or a regular place outside the masjid, I ask myself, what can I do for other people?”

The khateeb, at 24:40

In one sentence

Sadaqah is not limited to wealth, because every person can turn their different blessings, abilities, words, care, and service into selfless benefit for family and community.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Reframes sadaqah from financial charity to any good a person can offer.
  2. Illustrates the Prophet’s practical help through the poor man’s cloth, bowl, axe, and work.
  3. Expands sadaqah to remembrance, encouraging good, removing harm, and lawful marital intimacy.
  4. Teaches gratitude for different and temporary blessings rather than comparing provisions.
  5. Calls listeners to serve their families and communities with a giving mindset.

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that sadaqah is much bigger than giving money. Allah gives each person different gifts, wealth, time, knowledge, health, words, or strength, and each gift can be used for good. Caring for family, encouraging goodness, removing harm, and serving others can all become worship. We should be grateful for our blessings without comparing ourselves, because worldly things are temporary. After Jumu'ah, we can ask what we can give to our families, masjid, and neighbors.

  1. What is one gift Allah gave you that you can use to help someone this week?
  2. How can we make our home a place where people feel cared for?
  3. What could we remove or improve in a shared space today?
