The Prophet's mercy should shape our character
“The imam is taking care of the people behind him, not taking care of himself during the salah.”
Loving and following Prophet Muhammad means embodying his mercy, empathy, justice, gentleness, attentiveness, and service in family life, teaching, leadership, worship, and everyday relationships.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Reframes the question about the Hour as a question of preparation, especially loving and following the Prophet.
- Argues that love of the Prophet must appear in character and actions, not merely words or claims of following the Sunnah.
- Presents household examples of the Prophet serving his family, worshipping gratefully, and showing gentleness and mercy.
- Shows his empathetic teaching through the young man asking about adultery and his justice and affection toward Fatima.
- Applies prophetic character to parenting, urging presence, active listening, empathy, and protection from harmful outside influences.
- Describes his leadership and imamate through restraint, concern for crying babies, accessible speech, and attention to congregants.
- Concludes by urging listeners to perfect their character and be a mercy to others.
In the khateeb's words
“It's not about when. It's about what did you prepare for that.”
“This will speak louder than words. Actions speaks louder than verbs or words.”
“They need us to listen to them. I'm not saying just listening, but I'm saying active listening.”
“The imam is taking care of the people behind him, not taking care of himself during the salah.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that loving the Prophet Muhammad means following his kindness in our everyday actions. The khateeb described how he helped his family, spoke gently, and cared about other people’s feelings. When a young man brought a troubling question, he guided him through conversation and made dua for him. The khutbah also reminded parents that children need their attention and active listening, alongside having their everyday needs met. From shortening prayer for a crying baby’s mother to asking a young boy about his bird, these examples encourage us to notice people and treat them with mercy.
- What helps you feel heard when you want to talk about something difficult?
- Like the Prophet asking the young boy about his bird, how could you show interest in something that matters to someone else?
