Purposeful work can bring us closer to Allah
“The goal is to come closer to Allah through every means possible in front of us.”
Muslims should reject the idea that ordinary labor is beneath them or that effortless retirement is the goal, finding purpose and closeness to Allah through disciplined work, worship, and service to others.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Modern advertising portrays mundane labor as beneath people and free time as the ideal.
- Islam rejects escaping basic work and warns that undirected leisure erodes purpose.
- Surah Al-Muzzammil and the Prophet’s example frame life as sustained effort and service.
- Aisha’s report, Dawud’s example, and the pious show humility and productive labor.
- Repeated tasks, including Quran memorization and household work, become rooted practices with deeper benefits.
- Listeners are urged to find beauty and wisdom in work, worship, and family care.
In the khateeb's words
“But think about this concept that the goal of a Muslim is not to retire. The goal of a Muslim is not to live comfortably and not need to work.”
“And when you'll see that amongst the most pious of Muslims, they will be the ones that would clean the masjid, they would be cleaning their houses, they would be doing everything with their families.”
“The goal is to come closer to Allah through every means possible in front of us.”
“In each one of these, there are profound lessons of wisdom for us to learn.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that everyday work can help us come closer to Allah. The khateeb described how the Prophet served his family and mended his own belongings, showing us the dignity of ordinary tasks. Cooking, cleaning, studying, and caring for one another can become opportunities to serve Allah and grow in humility. He also explained that repeated worship and Quran recitation can build roots whose meaning deepens over time. Getting help when we need it is important, and we can still value the work and appreciate those who do it.
- Which everyday chore could you approach as a way to serve Allah and help our family?
- What is something someone does for you regularly that you would like to thank them for?
- What is one thing you have memorized that you would like to understand better?
