Live so your presence brings comfort
“Every breath you take, every action you perform, every word you speak is a choice of which death you are choosing.”
A believer should strive to become someone whose death is a rest for their own soul by enduring trials with faith and living as a source of mercy and benefit rather than harm to others and creation.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Opens by framing life and death as a test and urging taqwa and self-accounting.
- Explains the funeral-procession hadith: the righteous find rest from worldly hardship, while people and creation find rest from the wicked.
- Turns the hadith into a mirror for daily conduct, asking whether one's presence brings peace or burdens family, community, coworkers, and the environment.
- Urges sincere repentance, becoming a source of comfort, and meeting Muslim responsibilities with iman, Quranic wisdom, and prophetic guidance.
- Closes with gratitude for trials, moral repair through good deeds and good conduct, and supplications for guidance, forgiveness, and a righteous death.
In the khateeb's words
“the believer who lived righteously death becomes a release like a prisoner free from chains”
“to live in such a way that your departure brings relief to creation itself”
“every breath you take every action you perform every word you speak is a choice of which death you are choosing”
“whose presence brings comfort whose words heal rather than harm whose actions contribute to the betterment of all creation”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that death can be a relief for the believer who has carried life's hardships with faith, or a relief for others if a person lived harmfully. Our daily choices show which path we are taking: our words, decisions, treatment of family and neighbors, and care for the world can bring comfort or burden. We are encouraged to return to Allah with sincere repentance and ask forgiveness when we have caused harm. We should meet difficulties with patience and gratitude, seeing them as chances to grow and be purified. A simple way forward is to answer wrong with good, practice excellent conduct, and become a source of mercy for all creation.
- When do people feel lighter after talking with you?
- What is one hard thing that could help you grow?
- What good deed could repair a mistake this week?
