Faith means acting on what you believe

“A believer is one who acts on the principle.”

The khateeb, at 45:13

In one sentence

Islam requires each person to move from nominal submission to lived faith by personally assuming responsibility in every role and acting conscientiously according to divine guidance.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Quranic verses and hadith establish personal accountability and guardianship.
  2. Al-Islam is presented as a complete way of life that reveals reality beyond appearances.
  3. Hardship and oppression do not remove human agency; people must strive and align with divine guidance.
  4. The khutbah distinguishes a Muslim's submission from a believer's active faith.
  5. Conscience recognizes right and wrong, while conscientiousness anticipates obligations and acts without compulsion.
  6. Listeners are urged to prepare for judgment by fulfilling responsibilities, repaying debts, examining themselves, and correcting wrongs.

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminds us that Islam is not only a name or an outward submission; faith becomes real when it shapes what we do. Each person is responsible before Allah for the roles, promises, words, debts, and relationships entrusted to them. We should learn the Quran, reflect on it, and check whether our conduct is consistent at home, work, school, and the masjid. Other people can teach, encourage, and support us, but no one can pray, choose, or answer for us. The goal is to become conscientious people who notice what needs doing and do it because it is true and right.

  1. What is one small responsibility you can notice and complete this week without being reminded?
  2. How can you show the same honesty at home, school, online, and with friends?
  3. What does it mean to act on something because it is true, not just because someone told you?
