Realign your life with Allah's guidance
“What would happen if Muslims in America stopped thinking of Islam just as an identity, a religious identity?”
Human beings are created with an upright, God-given fitrah, but family, culture, and unconscious conditioning can obscure it, so Muslims must consciously realign their beliefs and conduct with Allah's guidance.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines fitrah as humanity's original upright nature and urges direct engagement with the Qur'an.
- Explains how parents, culture, environment, and schooling condition how that nature is expressed.
- Contrasts Muslim identity with consciously living Islam through mercy, honesty, justice, and service.
- Invites listeners to examine unconscious assumptions, fears, desires, and social attachments.
- Calls for realignment through the Qur'an and Hadith and intentional identity development.
- Closes by affirming human worth, excellence, and the ability to choose better conduct.
In the khateeb's words
“What would happen if Muslims in America stopped thinking of Islam just as an identity, a religious identity?”
“It's time to stop living from an identity that taught you to disappear.”
“The question is whether you have developed a consciousness to recognize that worth and the character and discipline and responsibility to express your capabilities fully in the way that you live.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb said that every person begins with a God-given fitrah, an upright nature, before family and society shape how that nature is expressed. Childhood experiences and repeated messages can teach us to hide, seek approval, or believe we are inadequate, even when those beliefs are not true. Islam is more than a label or clothing; it is a way of life shown through mercy, honesty, fairness, service, and responsibility. We can return to our fitrah by noticing what has shaped us, asking what we need to turn away from, and using the Qur'an and Hadith to guide our choices. Allah created us with excellence, and we can choose how to live from this moment forward.
- What is one message from childhood that still shapes how you see yourself?
- Where could our family practice Muslim consciousness through mercy, honesty, or service this week?
- What is one belief or habit you would like to realign with Allah's guidance?
